A BACKGROUND ON WASP STINGS There
are many different wasp sting remedies, some of which are based on the
old belief that wasp stings are alkali. Therefore the sting was thought
to be neutralized by applying a weak acid such as vinegar or
bicarbonate of soda. These days doctors now believe that the
combination of different active chemicals in wasps venom means it is
actually neutral, and not alkali, so vinegar and other acids are no
longer thought to be effective treatments. These remedies are listed below. If you want to get rid of wasps permanently
Wasps
are very active during the summer months, busy with the task of finding
food to bring up the larval wasps back at the nest. This keeps them
mostly out of the way of humans, and you are much more likely to get
stung by a wasp during autumn, when their duties at the nest have
ceased and the harvest of fallen, over ripe fruit starts attracting
them. This fallen fruit ferments as it rots on the ground, and the
wasps that feed from this become ‘drunk', which makes them much more
aggressive and more likely to sting humans. At this time of year it is
a sensible precaution to use wasp repellent if you are spending time
outdoors, and keep drinks and food covered as this will attract them.
If you notice a large number of wasps in your garden, then you may have
a nest nearby. Take a good look around to see if you can spot any areas
that wasps are gathering near, especially trees, earth banks, roof
spaces and wall cavities. If you do find a nest you will need to call a
professional exterminator, and you must never disturb the nest
yourself.
